General Certification

The Makerspace is an area designed to let students bring their ideas to life. However, many of the tools used to do this can be dangerous if not used properly. Sharp objects such as paper slicers and exacto knives need to be properly capped and put away when not in use. There are many hot items present in the Makerspace, including: heat presses, soldering irons, heat guns, hot glue guns, 3D printer beds and nozzles, an oven and more. These items WILL burn you if they are directly touched while hot. Some materials look identical when hot and cold, and items may still be hot even after being turned off. Do not touch the item to determine if it is hot or not. Burn cream is located by the 3D printers at Puyallup, and on top of the first aid kit at Fort Steilacoom. When using adhesives, wear gloves and have a separate layer of paper or paper towels beneath the object.

The Makerspaces have a variety of personal protective equipment (PPE) available for use. These include: earplugs, noise cancelling headphones, plastic aprons, respiratory masks, safety glasses, vinyl gloves, work gloves, and cut-prevention gloves. Please ask a Makerspace employee if you need help acquiring the proper PPE for your project. Long hair must be tied up when working with machinery and close-toed shoes must be worn at all times. Both Makerspaces have a first aid kit and fire extinguisher available. At the Fort Steilacoom Makerspace, the first aid kit is located inside the office to the right of the door. The fire extinguisher is located above the Glowforge. At the Puyallup Makerspace, the first aid kit is at the front of the Computer Lab, to the left of the door saying "STAT Members Only." The fire extinguisher is located across the hall from the main entrance to the Computer Lab. The first aid kits include an emergency first aid guide, nitrile gloves, cold packs, bandages, gauze pads, antiseptic towelettes, bandage compress', burn cream, trauma pads, first aid tape, antibiotic ointment, eye wash, and eye pads.
