Before using the sewing machine, check to see the machine, power cord, and needle are not damaged. If they are, do not use the machine and let an employee know. ensure you have the proper attachments and settings for what you will be doing. This includes: using the proper needle for the fabric type, and using a wide throat plate for decorative stitches.

When using the machine, ensure your fingers are always at least 1 inch away from the needle. Stitch forward and back at the beginning and end to ensure the thread stays in place. Do look away from the machine during use. Take breaks when sewing for long periods of time to reduce eye strain and inattention. Don't sew across pins. Turn the machine off and clear the machine and area after use.

Potential Hazards: Sharp edges, knife blade, scissors, pins, eye strain, operator error, inattention with the potential of causing puncture wounds and cuts to the finger.
